JAMB Official Blames Boko Haram For Missing Funds

Ishaq Oloyede, registrar of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board

The Yobe State Coordinator of the Joint Admission Matriculation BoardSanusi Atose, has blamed his inability to account for N613, 000 belonging to the board on the activities of Boko Haram insurgents in the state.

Atose made the submission when he appeared before an administrative panel in Abuja, led by the JAMB registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, when he was ordered to explain the disappearance of the cash received from the sale of scratch cards.

Premium Times reports the official told the panel that tellers, receipts and invoices were destroyed in a Boko Haram attack, which he said left him with no documentation for the transaction.

His submission was however dismissed by the JAMB boss and ordered him to refund the whole amount within a week.

“Kindly go and pay government money within one week, else you will be in trouble,” the registrar told Mr. Atose.

Also in his account before the panel, Daniel Agbor, the Kogi State coordinator of JAMB, said the N7 million missing from his office was spent on assisting other workers in his office, who he said were ravaged by poverty.

“The state of the state offices is such that we are in poverty and money is there with us,” Mr. Agbor told the panel.

“You need the grace of God in the state offices not to steal money because money is tempting. We borrowed the money and I am not the only one, I will provide the list of everyone involved in the fraud.”

“To err is human, to forgive is divine, please don’t take me to the police, please be lenient with me, sir,” he pleaded.

“If you hear that I have given up in the police cell, will you say I am sorry? I just gave birth to my first issue. Most of us are on loan, my salary is N175, 000, but when they deduct my loans, my salary remains N90,000, which is not enough for me so I borrowed from the government purse.”

Mr. Agbor further claimed he paid N265,000 into an account allegedly on the instruction of the former registrar of the board.

“I was informed of missing scratch cards, but security personnel, the police and civil defence, invaded the office, retrieved the cards and they paid some money back. I informed the former registrar and he directed me to send the money to an account, which I did. I later learnt the money was transferred to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence. So that one was not calculated at all,” he said.

His defence was however not acceptable to the panel.

“I will give you one week from today as we speak,” Mr. Oloyede told the coordinator. “I want to see you pay everything in your custody, else I will hand you over to the police.

“Deduct the N265, 000 from the N7 million, then give us the account in which the former registrar gave you to send the money to.”

Recall also that a JAMB official at its Makurdi, Benue State office, Philomena Chieshe, claimed a mysterious snake swallowed N36 million government cash in her custody.

Over 50 Nigerian Migrants Rescued Off The Coast of Libya

Nigerian Migrants (Photo Credit: NAN)

Libya’s coastguard and an international charity organization, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) have rescued over 50 Nigerian Migrants in the Mediterranean.

The Nigerian Migrants were among the about 110 migrants rescued  by Aquarius, a ship being operated by MSF,  21 miles from the coast west of Tripoli.

News Agency of Nigeria confirmed that more than half the migrants on that boat were Nigerians, with the rest from other sub-Saharan African countries as well as two Palestinians.

The migrants and their  smugglers were trying to take advantage of calm seas as they launched a flurry of boats towards Italy.

Meanwhile the coastguard in Zuwara, a former Libyan smuggling hub west of Zawiya, said they had foiled a departure during the night and arrested some migrants whilst others had escaped with smugglers.

As a result of the security lapse in Libya, about 600,000 migrant have been ferried across the Mediterranean sea to Italy in the last four years.

Naija News understands that 18 women and one child were also rescued.

Since last summer the rate of departures dropped significantly after smugglers in the Libyan town of Sabratha struck a deal with the Tripoli government to halt their activities and were then pushed out of the town by rival armed groups.

Man-U Secure Vital 2-1 Win Against Liverpool At Old Trafford

Marcus Rashford struck twice to give Manchester United a vital 2-1 victory in the North West derby against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday.

goalkeeper David De Gea long ball was headed on by target-man Romelu Lukaku into the path of Rashford.

The England international then outdid Trent Alexander-Arnold, cut inside on to his right foot and confidently buried the ball in the far corner to open the scoring in the 14th minute.

Lukaku again won another challenge with Dejan Lovren before his pass towards Juan Mata was deflected into the path of Rashford.

The youngster showed great confidence and technique as he beat Loris Karius to make it 2-0.

In the 66th minute, Liverpool brought themselves back into the game when United defender Eric Bailly made a complete mess  of a Sadio Mane cross from the left

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, however, said both teams dominated at different points in the game.

“We can split the halves – United first half and Liverpool second but in my opinion our first half was a half with goals and danger.

“In the second half – in my opinion, and probably the people in the studio have a different opinion – was Liverpool controlling with the ball and United controlling without the ball.

“Our team was always in control. Even in set pieces, corners, dangerous situations we were in control so I think we deserved it.

“Against Liverpool if you play bad when you have the ball you can be in trouble. In the second half it was not our intention – I cannot say this was the plan.

“Liverpool pushed us into defensive situation but we kept control. It was a complete performance by us with two different halves.

“If people don’t think we deserved it, I don’t care.”

News Agency of Nigeria reports that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp claimed in his post-match interview that his side should have had a penalty when Sadio Mane was challenged by Marouane Fellaini and they deserved at least a point.

“It was a clear penalty with Fellaini on Mane, in situations like this you need the right decision.

“It is all about the result and we lost.”
